Four bucks for French Fries - Carny Town

Link: Four bucks for French Fries - Carny Town.

He reports a major frustration with the prices. Just a little while ago he had to pay $4 for french fries and $3.50 for a hamburg. Along with paying high admission prices and gas at $4.29 a gallon, here....it is the price of a Disney World vacation and maybe worse. His question, and it does have a great deal of validity. Do we blame the politicians or should we not take a long hard look at where we are going as businessmen.? Our US Dollars value is 50 cents to the Euro Dollar...which actually means that in present dollar values, the gas prices that we are REALLY paying are $9 (IMHO). About the only thing that we entertainment professionals can do is to look long and hard at our prices. Can we raise our prices because, gas and other costs are up? And if we do that; will we not be contributing to the inflationary affect on the dollar and pricing ourselves out of the market

North Carolina State Fair --- Raleigh, NC

Link: infinitexchange: North Carolina State Fair --- Raleigh, NC.

We visited the North Carolina State Fair yesterday. It was my first time to attend this larger than life event, eventhough I have lived in North Carolina for almost 7 years now. It had been a long time since I have visited a State Fair, probably at least 14 years. Things have changed, in some ways... + there is a lot more variety in food - the freak shows are about the same (although I frequented none, the ads say enough) + the carnies are still loud and obnoxious - they mainly give out trashy prizes (although the $100 gas card was tempting, if I could actually climb a rock wall) + one ride actually had its own DJ, who resembled Rick Flair a bit - the fun house attractions have not changed much at all (I saw one, similar to one I went in at age 11, 20 years ago.) + The guess your weight/age/birth month guys were about my favorite carnie attraction. Especially when they miss your friend's age by 6 years (over) and you can harass him the rest of the day +Smoky the Bear actually sang Happy Birthday to himself, a little creepy, but hilarious + The landscaping was incredible + Heritage Village had the best apple cider and music + The best food was at the frontgate, a charity had chicken wraps, diet coke, cookie, and chips for $5.00. It is

Benjiesque: If Colors Themselves Could Catch Fire

Link: benjiesque: If Colors Themselves Could Catch Fire.

I assumed the fair would be here all weekend, but the fair moved away as quickly as it came. I awoke at nine on Sunday and quickly dressed and left for my office. Upon leaving, I looked out toward the marketplace and saw that it was completely bare of the multicolored tents and attractions and rides. It had all been packed up during the night, I suppose, and the carnies had all left covertly, under the cloak of darkness and cold. All that remained were too-large birds that made low pitched gurgling noises in the backs of their throats, alerting other too-large birds to abandoned, rotting caches of food left behind in the rush to evacuate. Some older ladies in bright, floral Nylon outfits walked, slow and languid, around the perimeters of the now-empty marketplace, staring straight ahead at their visible breaths, one of the only indications that they were still alive. A shell-shocked man pushed an empty stroller, looking as if he had lost something and was searching for it amidst the rubble.

2nd time around for this Post!-Eulogy for a Showman

Eulogy for a Showman

The day has drawn to its darkened end.
Light shows fade out beyond twilight’s bend.
Ticket booth darkened, the end’s not far -
Silence bewildering between grass and star.

Generators cough, steel hammers sigh...
Metal beings disassembled, travel drawing nigh.
Foremen yelling for the Green to get to it...
Dismantling their present just to get through it.

A Mulligan Wheel crumbling to the ground
meticulously unraveling - later to be found
erected again. A great monster of heights.
But silenced for just this moment - just this night.

The Grand Carousel of Herschell’s persuasion
being stripped of horses in slough’s invasion.
Poles shaken loose as the great canvas falls -
wrapping in on itself, the work never stalls.

But I... I must leave to seek further spots
to play our show...to seek better lots.
I leave with fond sorrow wrapped in my heart.
Heaven is waiting, of which, we are all a part.

As the midway falls, it resurrects itself miles away
bright as the old. Its majestic charm never fades.
Not set in stone are our lives frail and swift.
I will be a part of the smallest aisle to the highest lift.

And when darkness meets the darkened carnival lights,
I will be watching the crew from the nearest of heights.
Do not mourn the passing of this simple man
but know... Know that I will set up again.
