It’s not served on a stick, but it’s weird enough to make the list of memorable State Fair foods. Pot roast sundaes and 17 other strange concoctions made the cut for new food items at the Minnesota State Fair, which starts on Thursday. Spam, made by Hormel Foods Corp. of Austin, Minn., is the main ingredient in three of the new foods, and eight of the new foods are served on a stick. The pot roast sundae consists of a scoop of mashed potatoes covered with roast beef, gravy, corn, and a cherry tomato—no ice cream. It’ll be available at Main Street Butcher Block. Other new food items include: * Beignets: sweet fried dough. * Brat Burger: ground bratwurst in a grilled patty served on a pretzel roll. * Breakfast Spam Sandwich: Spam, egg and cheese. * Deep-fried Norwegian Banana Split: banana rolled in lefse, deep fried, topped off with ice cream and all of the toppings. * Fiddlestix: vanilla ice cream hand sliced, skewered, dipped in chocolate and rolled in chopped nuts. * Foot-long Desert Pizza On A Stick: pizza dough, sweet cream cheese, cinnamon and sugar, served on a stick. * Fruity Tooty Swirl: fresh fruit smoothies with a swirl of ice cream. * Fry Dog: french-fry encrusted deep-friend hot dog on a stick. * Funnel Cake Fries: funnel cake formed like french fries, served with chocolate dipping sauce. * Krumkake: thin crisp pastry rolled into a horn shape, filled with whipped cream and topped with fresh fruit. * Nacho Mama Dog: Tex Mex beef dipped in batter, deep fried and topped with cheese and all of the nacho fixings. * Open-faced Grilled Spam Sandwich: Spam burgers. * Peach Glazed Pig Cheeks: pork cheeks marinated in garlic, herbs, spices, and honey, served on a stick and grilled with peach chipotle glaze. * Spam Hot Dog. * Sunfish: sunfish filets served in a boat. * Swedish meatballs and gravy, * Tornado Potato: spiral-cut potato on a stick. The fair opens Thursday and runs through Labor Day at the state fairgrounds in St. Paul.
