Link: Tobacco smoke may linger in fair air.
Early yesterday afternoon a half-dozen carny workers -- all but one puffing on cigarettes -- were setting up the popular Himalaya kiddy ride in the middle of the fair's midway. None of the workers was aware they're being asked to respect the voluntary smoking ban when the fair opens.
Londoner Dave Anderson, a pack-a-day smoker, is working his 20th Western Fair and while he insisted he'll never light up while helping children onto the ride, he said he wasn't about to pass up the odd smoke during those three minutes between unloading one group of riders and loading the next.
"I can't see any reason why I can't smoke behind the ride," said Anderson, who began smoking at age eight and says he usually butts out after a couple of drags between rides.
Western Fair manager Dave Taylor said Anderson might have no problem complying with the fair's four outdoor designated smoking areas -- one of which he says is about 30 metres from the Himalaya.
