Mariachi music will define this year’s Cinco de Mayo Festival. With four mariachi bands in the two-day lineup of performers, Sunday’s program is being billed as a Mariachi Festival. The Guadalupe Center’s 17th annual Cinco de Mayo Street Festival begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday evening. Nine bands, including mariachi bands from Kansas, Missouri and Texas, are slated to fill the festival’s schedule. Kicking off at noon on Saturday with a performance by Kansas City’s own El Grupo Folklorico Atotonilco, the family-friendly event will offer children’s carnival rides on Avenida Cesar E. Chavez, which will be closed for the festival between Jarboe and Summit streets; dancing in the courtyard on a temporary dance floor; Mexican food items priced from $1 to $7 that will include burritos, sausages, nachos, fajitas, tamales; vegetarian selections; and rice and beans prepared by the Guadalupe Center’s culinary program; beer by the Boulevard Brewing Company and soft drinks; sales of crafts, jewelry, toys and T-shirts; and a photo montage of past festivals. Admission to the festival is free. Festivalgoers can purchase tickets to the children’s rides with cash.
