Some demolition derbies at northern Kentucky county fairs this year are a cut above. They feature lawn mowers. Promoter John Peck told The Kentucky Enquirer that every county fair his Top Dog Promotions is working wants a lawn mower demo derby. The Kenton County Fair and Horse show will stage the events Monday and Tuesday nights. The Carroll County Fair had one earlier and the Boone and Gallatin county fairs will have them next month.

Clean up began Saturday morning at the Eddy County Fairgrounds, in preparation for the annual Eddy County Fair, set for July 27 to Aug. 1. Some volunteers showed up as early as 6 a.m. to get the location in tip top shape for the upcoming event. "We came as early as we could," said fair board member Donnie Garthwite. "We want to make sure it looks good for everyone that shows up. "Hopefully we'll have as big a crowd as we did last year." Fair board President Joel Bell said there were at least 50 volunteers who showed up in the early morning hours to show their support. "We had people painting, sweeping, power washing the floors, raking leaves and picking up trash. We want this place looking its best for the Junior Livestock sale and rodeo, which will held on Saturday Aug. 1. "Saturday is also 'Tough enough to wear pink' night, in support of breast cancer research," said Bell. Among the cleanup crew was 7-year-old Artesia resident Taylor Scott, who happened to be covered in paint. "We painted all the picnic benches and round tables," he said with a mischievous grin. Taylor, along with his brother, David Scott, and Lewis Chandler, added fresh coats of paint to the sitting areas, as the two boys' mother Karen Scott supervised the effort. Though most of the volunteers came out of a sheer willingness to help out, others were coaxed by their parents. "My parents made me come out and help make Artesia look good for the fair crowd," said Weston

The Missouri State Fair Pepsi Grandstand stage will radiate with affordable summer entertainment as top musicians covering a genre of styles kick off the concert series on Aug. 13. Tickets went on sale June 20, at 7 a.m. Two concerts are priced as low as $10 with rock legend Kansas bringing down the house with free grandstand seating on Sunday, Aug. 16. Fair Director Mark Wolfe said the value-priced approach to the grandstand entertainment this year is a reflection of the fair’s commitment to affordability. “We considered economic circumstances when selecting concerts,” Wolfe said. “We hope the free concert by Kansas and other price-sensitive shows will allow fairgoers to experience the fair on multiple days.” Kansas released their first album in 1974. Singles include the very popular “Carry on Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind.” Wolfe said other affordable concerts offered at this year’s State Fair will include Cross Canadian Ragweed with local favorite LoCash Cowboys for $10 on Opening Day, Thursday, Aug. 13. It’ll be a weekend to remember with the lineup of musicians the Nodaway County Fair board has reserved for this year. Artists locally and nationally renowned will be coming to rock the socks off of all who want to have a great time. For three consecutive nights, July 16, 17 and 18, come out for the evening’s rocking country. Opening the weekend will be a long-time love for the Midwest, especially when it comes to rock-and-roll dance bands. Yes, the Rumbles will be performing at 6:30 pm, Thursday night, July 16. Following the Little Mr. and Miss Nodaway County contest, these gentlemen are ready to play the night away; and with several years of raucous rocking and rampart rolling, that’s just what they’re going to do. Starting in the 1960s as a garage band from Council Bluffs, IA, the Rumbles have rocked their way onto the stages of several Midwestern concerts and into the Billboard Hot 100 with their single “Jezebel.” After years of band member changes, the Rumbles are today what they were decades ago: the best rock-and-roll dance band around. Members include guitarist Gayle Adams, bassist Todd Henseler, keyboardist/guitarist Tim Vasquez and drummer Steve Hough. Kicking off Friday night’s musical bash will be Nodaway County’s Festival leader, Britt Small, at 6:15 pm, who is anything but small in the music business. Having been a musician for 48 years now, Small has stood the test of time and continues to do so to this day. From serving in the Vietnam War to providing for those veterans who gave their best to this country along with him, Small puts first those who put their lives second when this country needed them. Now performing all across the country, and even into Canada a handful of times, Small has played with names like Alabama, Willie Nelson, the late Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers and the Oak Ridge Boys, just to name a few. He has performed in any American gathering one could possibly think of: from state fairs and casinos, to national gatherings at the Veterans Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. Accomplishing so much as an artist, yet still desiring to provide more for his fellow Americans, Small is excited to still be in the industry that has enabled him to give back more to his country and fellow veterans than he thought imaginable.
